January 2005 is now in the books and if you where lucky enough to get offshore in between the cold fronts you where greeted with some exceptional bottom fishing. Red snappers in record numbers have been caught in the past month. The thicker congregations of red snapper we found in shallower waters with natural bottom. Several days we where forced to weed through dozens of shorts before striking gold with larger keepers. Most of our snapper came off the 21F line and we also took Red and Grey Groupers in deeper waters, however we did notice a huge reduction in action in the deeper waters. The waters clarity has been excellent which has greatly reduced the number of pesky sharks that we where catching in December. Even though we did not target any kingfish this month, the vessels that did had excellent reports of reaching their limit on a daily basis to the South of us near Pelican Flats area. Our efforts kept us well north and focused on the Hot bottom bite.
